Chevron Corporation Production/ Reservoir Engineer in Bakersfield, California

Chevron is accepting online applications for the Production/ Reservoir Engineer position through February 10, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. (PST).

The San Joaquin Valley Business Unit has a large resource base that represents an important portion of Chevron’s portfolio. The SJVBU Reservoir Engineer is responsible for generating value to the company by improving field’s performance, generating cost optimization opportunities and/or participating in the design and development of new projects. Job scope could include reservoir characterization, subsurface development plans, steam flooding/water flooding management, surveillance, analysis and optimization (SA&O), production and injection forecasts, and economic analysis. The role provides significant cross-functional exposure since it requires regular interface with primary stakeholders including Operations, Drilling and Completions, Facilities Engineering and Permitting.

Located in the southern San Joaquin Valley, the city of Bakersfield has a population of half a million residents with strong ties to tradition, family and community. The city is centrally located: Los Angeles and San Francisco with their world-class cultural attractions are within a 2-hour and 4.5-hour drive, respectively. For outdoor recreation, both beaches and the California's Sierra Nevada mountains are easily accessible from Bakersfield. With its own airport, Bakersfield has direct flights to major hubs like San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, and Phoenix. Bakersfield has schools for grade K-12 and it is home to California State University and other colleges. The average temperature in the summer is 90s, with the hottest month being July. Winter months will average 45-50, with the coolest month being January

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Steamflood Management:

  • Perform assigned reviews of steamflood projects including review of injection data to understand injection performance and ensure we are injecting the right rates into the right zones, and review of drainage to identify opportunities for improvement including economic justification for workovers or other activities to provide effective reservoir drainage

  • Perform required latent heat calculations and identify heat cuts, and heat mining opportunities

  • Monitor steamflood performance post steam cuts to identify reversibility

  • Develop, execute, and analyze Steamflood SA&O plans including but not limited to steamflood and well maturity classifications

  • Waterflood Management:

  • Support Target Zero Surface Movement (TZSM) by reviewing subsidence data and identifying rate changes (injection and/or production) to rebalance FIFO and correct subsidence. Share requirements with stakeholders

  • Quarterly or other ad-hoc reviews of YTD subsidence issues are required

  • Monitor daily injection surveillance to optimize the number of injection strings online and the quality of injection (areal and vertical sweep efficiency). Actions may include requesting RTI, rate changes, operational maintenance or identification or workover opportunities

  • Maximizing Economic Base Production

  • Perform well reviews and manage down wells in collaboration with the Reservoir Performance and Subsurface Development teams

  • Perform technical troubleshooting of well production issues

  • Identify well workover opportunities and progress through Chevron planning and execution tracking tools

  • Monitor workover permit progress and coordinate with the drilling and completions group for execution schedule

  • Interface with the Reservoir Performance team on production optimization

  • Provide detailed engineering support to mature development projects to a ready-for -execution state

  • Collaborate with the project Earth Scientist to conduct subsurface refinement work based on the opportunity catalog and updated earth models

  • Generate production and injection forecasts utilizing multiple techniques including analogs, type curves, volumetric calculations, etc. Determine project EUR based on residual oil and recovery factor studies

  • Perform economic evaluations for development projects

  • Serve as Post Drilling Project Coordinator to ensure project design parameters are executed and implemented

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Petroleum Engineering or similar.

  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal.

  • Able to deliver strong business results in a flexible, cross functional environment.

  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

  • Proficient with MS office suite.

    Preferred Qualifications:

Technical Competency / Skills:

  • A minimum of a BS degree in a core Engineering discipline is required.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of thermal and/or water flooding recovery techniques is highly preferable. Experience with heat management is beneficial.

  • Ability to interpret surveillance data including but not limited to steam and water injection data, observation well data, production well tests, tracer logs and pressure data.

  • Experience conducting asset evaluations for steam flood and/or water flooding assets is favorable.

  • Skilled practitioner of reservoir engineering and subsurface project maturation. Knowledgeable and competent in opportunity identification, reservoir characterization, development planning, production forecasting, reservoir surveillance planning, and reserves estimating. Able to evaluate and decide between multiple reservoir development alternatives based on economics and risk.

  • Strong understanding of cross functional inputs (Facilities Engineering, Drilling and Completions, Artificial Lift, Permitting).

  • Experience in unconventional developments is a plus.

  • Experience developing and responding to production enhancing opportunities including workovers.

  • Experience with California regulatory requirements (for example, UIC and AoR requirements) is a plus.

Project Management / Business Acumen:

  • Able to develop and/or manage projects with limited oversight while engaging project stakeholders for design assurance and efficient execution.

  • Must be flexible, able to meet established deadlines and understand business and value drivers to effectively develop or manage projects to meet objectives in a low-cost environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize decision analysis tools and processes to evaluate multiple options for solutions to account for project risks and uncertainties. Familiar with assessment software including Excel, Crystal Ball, OFM, Access, Spotfire, PEEP, Power BI and Data Querying is preferable.

Communication / Collaboration:

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly convey concepts and objectives orally, in presentations and in technical reports.

  • Ability to build consensus and work collaboratively across functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to calibrate effort to level of risk.

  • Takes accountability for quality of technical work. Continues to grow and apply technical depth.

  • Proven ability to mentor younger engineers and earth scientists is beneficial.

  • Demonstrates balance between ultimate recovery and economic recovery by continuous cost/benefit analysis. Takes ownership, seeks to understand alternative perspectives and is comfortable making decisions in the face of uncertainty.

  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $121,100 – $ 278,500.
