Chevron Corporation Counsel/Senior Counsel in Bangkok, Thailand

Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Counsel/Senior Counsel located in Bangkok, Thailand through May 12, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

This position is in the Downstream, Chemicals & Midstream (DCM) Law Group in Bangkok. Counsel/Senior Counsel provides legal support to the DCM businesses in Thailand, which operate a network of Caltex retail outlets and fuel terminals and also marketing and distribution of lubricants. This role provides a complete array of legal services, including commercial and transactional support, litigation and litigation management, and advising business leaders and other company personnel. The position reports to the Chief Corporate Counsel, located in Bangkok.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Draft, review, comment, and negotiate moderate to more complex contracts and other legal instruments to support the Thailand operations such as service or supply contracts, purchase contracts, government contracts, sale agreements, partners or shareholder agreements, and other commercial agreements.

  • Handle legal matters and provide general legal advice in compliance with Thai laws, regulations, formalities and Chevron's legal policies and guidelines including relating to contracting, human resource law and operational excellence.

  • Provide clear, well-prepared, timely and fit-for-purpose oral and written legal advice to business clients and law management relating to, among others, contractual, legal rights and obligations, claims and lawsuits, and also provide advice to clients on new laws and their impact.

  • Engage and provide legal recommendations to business partners

  • Handle corporate governance matters

  • Lead and manage legal disputes; manage outside counsel

  • Participate in deployment of Law initiatives, such as DCM Law’s Diversity & Inclusion program

  • Effectively identify, select, instruct and manage outside counsel in compliance with Chevron’s Outside Counsel guidelines and processes, including establishing and managing outside counsel budget and controlling costs

  • Handle multiple matters and prioritize work assignments to consistently provide high-quality work product in a fast-paced work environment

  • Provide client training and instruction on various aspects of the law

  • Achieve results consistent with the Chevron Way, promote a culture of compliance, and maintain the highest professional standards

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law

  • License to practice law in Thailand

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), both in Thai and English

  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills, including familiarity with cross-border issues

  • Strong commitment to delivery of results

  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritize work

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work collaboratively with clients, other in-house counsel, external counsel, and Law Department professionals

  • Ability to effectively analyze, manage and report on a high volume of complex and diverse issues

  • High ethical standards and professional integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality

  • Willing to learn, take initiative and act proactively

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team with a team-player attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Litigation and corporate governance experience

  • Master’s degree in Law

  • Experience with a multi-national company and/or an international law firm

  • Working knowledge of FCPA is a plus

  • Modest amounts of travel will be required.
