Chevron Corporation Associate Research Chemist in Richmond, California

Chevron is accepting online applications for the Associate Research Chemist position through August 19th, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. (CST).

Chevron is seeking an Associate Research Chemist to support the Chemistry Development and Fundamentals (CDF) Team within the Global Technology Division of Chevron Oronite Company located at the Richmond Technology Center in Richmond, California. This position will serve as an associate research chemist working closely with other scientists synthesizing and evaluating new additives or developing a mechanistic understanding of additive performance in the area of lubricant oil chemicals.

The primary responsibilities for this position will include design, synthesis, purification, and analysis of organic molecules, as well as coordinating bench and performance tests in support of multiple research and development projects under the direction of a senior researcher. Responsibilities may also include some process engineering such as synthesis scale-up and larger scale production. Candidates should have demonstrated laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting. The Associate Research Chemist will be expected to contribute to the planning and execution of laboratory-based experiments and will interact with a multi-disciplinary team, including process engineers, fundamental scientists, and product line specialists, to help accelerate product development, problem-solving, and commercialization. Bench scale chemical synthesis, data generation and interpretation are major parts of this position. Candidates with a proven track record in these areas are highly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day technical work in an organic synthesis, analytical testing, or tribology laboratory in support of research and development projects.

  • Perform multi-gram, bench scale organic synthesis experiments, including chemical synthesis, purification, characterization (e.g., spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, FTIR, MS, and analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC), data analysis and interpretation.

  • Coordinate and perform performance testing, collection of data, data analysis and interpretation, and communication of results in written reports and presentations

  • Working frequently on non-routine tasks of broadly outlined assignments involving a wide range of chemistries and product line applications.

  • The position is dynamic and requires a mix of laboratory skills depending on the project business needs.

  • Ability to work in compliance with our rigorous safety standards.

  • Maintaining a high degree of independence and responsibility, reliability and accountability in planning and reporting laboratory experiments.

  • Communicating clearly and effectively with other chemists and engineers in the team to maximize productivity and facilitate collaboration

  • Documenting technical research in written reports and presentations

Required Qualifications:

  • BSc in chemistry (preferred) or other laboratory-based science with relevant laboratory research experience

  • 0-2 years of hands-on synthetic laboratory experience (academic or professional) in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, analytical science, or other closely related physical science disciplines

  • Familiarity with laboratory protocols and prudent lab practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interface/consult/collaborate with other chemists and with service providers outside the organization.

  • Demonstrated communication skills including preparing technical reports and presentations of scientific data.

  • Fluency with Microsoft Office computer software programs; computer competency to learn and utilize internal computer-based databases and programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in research and technical competency in organic chemistry (as evidenced by papers, patents or publications), analytical techniques (such as NMR, FTIR, GC-MS), and data interpretation of these techniques.

  • Demonstrated mechanical skills such as laboratory equipment knowledge and troubleshooting proficiency (laboratory glassware and/or larger scale units)

  • Quantified experience

  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment

  • Knowledge of Fuel and/or Lubricant additives
