Materials and Corrosion Engineer Overview:

We are looking for a Materials and Corrosion Engineer to join Chevron Technology Center in Houston, TX or Richmond, CA. The Materials and Corrosion Engineer position provides consulting services and support to Chevron’s Manufacturing, Chemicals, and other Downstream & Chemical businesses. The Material and Corrosion Engineer’s primary duties are to develop and communicate expertise on materials selection, damage mechanism reviews/identification, corrosion monitoring and control, failure analysis, interpretation of inspection data, critical reliability variables, welding and fabrication troubleshooting, mechanical design review, and equipment repair strategies. This role will also support the development and execution of fixed equipment asset strategies utilizing Risk Based Inspection (RBI) analysis per API 580 and API 581. The role will require participation in the Management of Change (MOC) process and provides support for refinery shutdown planning and execution. This career ladder position offers potential growth in this and related technical fields. The position requires an individual with a strong refinery process and reliability background and demonstrated leadership abilities.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Project concept development, scoping, equipment selection, application evaluation, supplier selection and writing specifications

  • Performing bid analysis, designing equipment, facilitating testing, assisting with field startup.

  • Performing troubleshooting, using and implementing digital solutions, and leading failure analysis.

  • Actively contributes to Research & Development (R&D) projects.

  • Develops solutions for complex issues and is a credible technical resource for all Chevron facilities

  • Influences and collaborates with customers to solve technical problems with the best risk-based solution and drives for adoption and implementation of leveraging technologies to improve returns and lower carbon.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently on a career break of 18 months or longer

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • Demonstrate solid experience working as a refinery Materials Engineer or equivalent, including responsibilities like those listed above.

  • Demonstrate good communication skills, both oral and written, vertically and across the organization.

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and participate in team activities resulting in high-quality problem solving, root cause analysis, damage mechanism reviews, and RBI studies.

  • Able to climb ladders and enter equipment.

Demonstrated ability to lead, organize and plan activities including root cause analyses, training, and damage mechanism identification.   • Technical Competency - Fundamental Competency and demonstrated experience in Materials Engineering consultation technical knowledge: materials selection, corrosion monitoring and control, failure analysis, interpretation of inspection data, and mechanical design. Working knowledge of corrosion and metallurgical damage mechanisms and mitigation techniques in the refining industry. Demonstrated experience in fixed equipment inspection and repair (e.g. interpretation of inspection data, equipment damage mechanisms). Demonstrated knowledge of pressure vessel, piping, tank and safety valve integrity management, repairs and application of API / ASME codes to inspect and repair registered equipment.

  • Initiative, Organization and Communication - Proven ability to work with minimal supervision and with proactive and self-starting work style. Ability to multitask including proven ability to handle multiple high priority assignments for different customers simultaneously. Proven ability to set realistic goals and fully complete work plans on schedule. Effective written and verbal communicator. Proficiency in the use of technology to communicate and collaborate with others including Office 365, SharePoint, OneNote, etc., as well as IDMS and RBI software.

  • Teamwork - Demonstrated ability to build and foster positive relationships with field personnel, operations, maintenance, and contractors. Proven to be a strong team player, who works effectively and cooperatively with others of varying technical and personal backgrounds, as well as diverse backgrounds. Actively shares knowledge and skills with others. Recognized as contributing to a positive team environment.
